Love your Bones class, with Caroline Hope-Hawkins, Thursdays 2.30pm
This class is especially geared towards those who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, osteopenia (precursor of osteoporosis), or who are simply concerned about their bone density.
Osteoporosis is characterised by decreasing or decreased bone mineral content which causes increased bone porosity. These changes typically lead to a greater risk of fractures particularly in the spine, hips and wrists. Targeted exercise to strengthen these areas and a healthy diet can maintain and improve bone density.
What causes osteoporosis?
Bone is alive and constantly changing. By the time the average person is in their mid 20’s to early 30’s peak bone mineral density is achieved. How dense each person's bones are at peak varies. This is partly down to genetics but can be heavily influenced by factors like hormones, disease, medical treatments (like chemotherapy), nutrition, exercise and age. With extremely low bone density, bones start to become porous and very easily broken. If someone has already suffered osteopenia, they are far more likely to develop osteoporosis when older - and sooner too. As these conditions are themselves painless, most people are unaware they ever had osteopenia and only find out they have osteoporosis after an injury.
Love your Bones classes
These Pilates based classes include targeted strengthening and stretching exercises to improve your muscle tone, posture and flexibility, exercises to improve balance and co-ordination (helping to reduce the incidence of falls and therefore reduce fractures). Pelvic and trunk stabilization exercises to increase core strength and weight bearing to facilitate the maintenance of bone density. You will learn to be aware how to stand, sit and move correctly for functional everday activites to prevent putting undue pressure on your spine and joints.
Prior to starting
If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis you may already have had a bone mineral density (BMD) test - usually a DEXA scan which scores your level of bone density (your T-score). We will need to know your T-score prior to joining this class. You should consult with your doctor if you suffer from osteoporosis (or any other serious medical condition or injury) and must also have medical clearance to exercise.
If you have not already registered with us please contact us here to register after which you can apply to join the 'Love your Bones' classes.
